FACTS AND FANCIES. INDICATIONS OF SPRING. A wonderful list of Indications of Spring, started by an old gentleman who died in 1797, at the age of ninety, and containing the results of observations extending over a century and a half, gives the following averages as medium dates when various flowers, birds, &c., appear: Snowdrops, January 16th; hawthorn, May 8th; wood-anemone, April 4th. Rooks build February 9th; swallows appear April 13th; cuckoo sings April 23rd. In 1750 [cadarnhau hwn efo`r ffynhonnell], a yellow butterfly was seen on January 14th. Frogs and toads start their annual croaking concerts about March 24th. Ring-doves were heard to coo on Christmas Day [25 Rhagfyr 1857]. For ninety-three years the nightingale was observed to sing about April 28th, although it has done so as early as the seventh day of that month.

Since 1832 the yellow-billed cuckoo has occurred in Wales on 3 occasions, being found dead in 1870 near Aberystwyth, and in 1899 at Craig y Don, Anglesey. The third was seen briefly at Porthclais Clais, Pembrokeshire on 30th October 1994, an occurrence graphically described by Devonald and Price 1994, the two fortunate observers. Bird watchers who had gathered to search for a yellow browed warbler reported nearby sadly missed out.

...the day was cloudless, a glorious morning. My first thought was 'Christ is Risen'.... There had been a frost and the air was rimy with a heavy thick white dew on hedge, bank and turf, but the morning was not cold...So I thought I would go and gather some primroses this morning and flower the grave for them. I strolled down the lane till I came in sight of the full mill pond shining between the willow trunks like a lake of in¬definite size. Here and there the banks and road sides were spangled with primroses and they shone like stars among the little brakes and bramble thickets overhanging the brook. A sheep and lamb having broken bounds were wandering about the lane by themselves and kept on fording and refording the brook where it crosses the road to get out of my way. The mill was silent except for the plash of the water from 'the dark round of the dripping wheel'. The mill pond was full, but I forgot to look at the sun in it to see if he was dancing as he is said to do on Easter morning. There was a heavy white dew with a touch of hoar frost on the meadows, and as I leaned over the wicket gate by the mill pond looking to see if there were any primroses in the banks but not liking to venture into the dripping grass suddenly I heard the cuckoo for the first time this year. He was near Peter's Pool and he called three times quickly one after another. It is very well to hear the cuckoo for the first time on Easter Sunday morning.

THE CUCKOO AND THE GOOSEBERRY CATERPILLAR.—About three weeks ago [dechrau Gorffennaf 1873?] many gooseberry bushes in the kitchen garden here were much infested with the caterpillar peculiar to the gooseberry. When the men were not about, and on Sundays, some cuckoos were obaerved every day on the bushes feeding on the caterpillars, which they thinned off coniderably in a week or two. I had them disturbed as little as possible, and sometimes as many as four or five at a time were seen enjoying their least. The cuckoo, from this habit of feeding on caterpillars, have, I think a strong claim to be put on the Schedule of the Birds` Projection Bill. During the season of the gooseberry caterpillar I do not find that any of the small birds do much good in clearing the bushes of them. Perhaps, the song thrush is as useful a bird to the gardener as any, for in the wet summer and autumn of last year it fed on the legion of slugs and snails all the time fruit was scarce. The thrush will have its dessert off the fruit not netted up, but not in the bold daring way of the blackbird, who is the greatest pest of all the small birds, except the bullfinch.

Tuesday, 25 April. At 10 o`clock I started in an April shower to walk to Peterchurch. ...... I went home another way over the hill to Blakemere. A wild storm of hail swept down the valley but I took shelter under a hawthorn bush and the sun still went on shining. When the wild storm and white squall were over I went on up the steep lane between the dripping glancing glittering hedges, till across a dingle which separated it from the lane I saw an old man at work on the cottage garden..... There [in the rich warm Meadows of Blakemere] in a field adorned with the noble pear tree of majestic height and growth in full blossom I found cowslips and the first bluebells and the young ferns uncurling their crozier heads. And the sun shone and the Cuckoo called and the pear tree waved her blossoms and all the sweet flower scents went up in fragrant incense and praise to God, and I gathered cowslips and bluebells and was as happy as a child.... Outside the door [of Hannah Preece`s cottage] on the cottage wall hung the old dry withered Birch and wittan twigs soon to be replaced on May Eve by new boughs to keep the old witch out and counteract her spells during the coming year .

Saturday, 29 April. The day of unceasing hopeless rain. I spent the morning in the village.... After luncheon I walked to the Wye Cliff in heavy rain. ... From Wye Cliff I went on through the ceaseless rain by the Wye-side meadow path to Llowes, passing by the old Barn. As I crossed these meadows I saw a cuckoo flying from tree to tree for the first time this spring. Above Pwlldwrgi the nine great poplar spires shone with a golden light even through the rain, and all the spouts and springs and Pistylls along the Brunant [sic] and Llowes banks were roaring wild and strong.... I passed through the village and went up by Ciluni Dingle sides in search of the upper Noyadd. Up and up I went past Moity and the chapel, the road growing narrower, sleepier and stonier, till at length from a lane it threatened to become a watercourse and the rain growing harder till I seemed to be amongst the clouds ..... I had come a mile out of my way up the steep stony hill in the pouring rain, but I soon dropped down again upon the little wayside sheltered chapel by the dingle brookside and heard the welcome clink of the anvil from the blacksmiths forge at Moity... That too late but M a tribute to stream was swollen by the ceaseless streaming rain to raging read torrent and went roaring down the dingle with the voice of thunder. I never saw the brooks out so quickly or roaring so fast and furious in so short a time....

Thursday, 4 May. Breakfast at 8 with the Archdeacon, train at 9, he to Doldowlod to discover if a Welsh services is needed Llanwrthwl Church (Answer, `No`).... It was a glorious noonday and I was glad I had decided to walk... The trees, and especially the oaks, were not yet fully out in leaf, but the larch groves shone brilliant and the graceful weeping birches which stood about the "banks and braes" had just veiled their slender delicate silvery limbs with their spring robes and fashions of the sweetest freshest tenderest green. The blackthorn was blossoming bright in the hedges, and from the banks a few primroses and blue violets looked at me with a smile of welcome..... The sun shone, and the stillness of mountain and valley was unbroken save by the bleating of the sheep, the rushing of the river and the calling of the cuckoo from the green hillsides

Wednesday May 1st I sent John Davies over to Talyllyn early this morning and walked over there early at 9.30: and intended to stay at Tyn y Cornel [sic.] for three days fishing. A better day for fishing could not well be expected, but although numbers of trout were rising, they were very hard to catch. Showers of rain fell during the day, and unfortunately the breeze got very light in the afternoon. I killed my best fish in the Burn Bay. Went into dinner [yn Tyn y gornel] at 6.30, the hotel being full. It was very pleasant sitting out afterwards, the cuckoo being in full song. Trout (Talyllyn) 7 (1) 15 oz.

HOLYWELL. THE CUCKOO.—The cuckoo has been twice heard in this neighbourhood, in the Fron Woods, on Tuesday [29 Ebrill], and in Halkyn Woods on Wednesday — probably the first this season. If so, it is only further evidence of what is already too evident,— that the present is a very late season.

Good Friday.
A nice warm day, but rather misty. wind very changeable from S.S.W. ... early start for Tyn-y-groes, as I intended to visit the Dolmellynlyn Lakes. .. I went onto Llyn Abbi, but the mist became very bad, and it was cold and wet. however I stuck to it as there was a nice breeze on the Lake but I only killed two trout both under 1/2 lb. Kinsey joined me at lunch time, having caught some small ones in the river, and as it was impossible owing to the mist to cross over to Llyn Por??ddaw, I went down to the Camlaw nd we fished down, but the sport was poor, the river being very low and clear. I heard the Cuckoo for the first time this year, and I also saw a pair of summer snipe. Trout 41 Camlaw. Trout 2 Llyn Abbi Two rods.

Friday, June 10, 1881 a cold night was followed by a most threatening looking morning: heavily packed serious looking clouds all packed across the sky, and I feared a wet day, and I am sorry to say my fears were realised, for about 10 o`clock the rain began to patter down, and after an hours downpour, continued to drizzle and rain all day, but the wind went SW and it was infinitely milder.
Not a fish was moving this morning and all around was as still is death – not even a cuckoo breaking the silence: this was a sure sign of rain. I gave up the fishing in disgust, and we had our usual dip in the Lake, and breakfast about 7.30, and we then resumed fishing again, but it was no good before the rain came, and it was infinitely worse afterwards: as there were no flies on the water, not that they were not there, as soon as we discovered olive duns [Baetis spp. ] were clinging to the rocks in profusion; these flies eventually did dribble onto the water, in the afternoon they brought a few fish up,. We took it easy in the morning, but we worked very hard the remainder of the day, but of course night fishing was out of the question in such weather, and wet as we were we did not attempt it. I landed a nice fish 3/4lb nearly opposite our tent on a small quill gnat – much resembling the fly on the water, and I got a fly a shade nearer it afterwards – so did G: and we circumvented a few trout with it. The natural was no doubt a sort of olive dun. I nailed another good fish on the opposite side close to the shore, which was rising greedily to the small dun. There were a fair number of Alders on the water, but the fish did not take kindly to them. The remainder of the day was uneventful and I was not sorry to get into a change of dry clothes, which I quickly did this evening. We found the tent stand the wet very well as long as it was not touched. We built Hide a very comfortable kennel of rock and heather, with a straw bed. The straw we found near the Lake, left there by some former visitors. I had my doubts about Hide staying there, but I am glad to say she slept there all night as quiet as a lamb without disturbing us; it would not have been pleasant to have had her as a fellow companion in the tent, wet and shaggy coated as she was:

PORTMADOC. THE WEATHER.—The long spell of dry weather HAS at length ended and early this week a welcome fall of rain set in. The cold dry weather of the past month [Ebrill 1891] has retarded the growth of vegetation and many fields have an appearance of winter than of spring, but the fall of rain will, it is hoped, soon alter this. The cuckoo and the swallow have both made their appearance here.

THE SEASON.—The season at Barmouth has had a very successful commencement. During Easter [Sul y Pasg 17 Ebrill 1892] there was a larger number of visitors in the town than has ever been known before. The weather has been unusually cold for the spring but it has compared very favourably with weather experienced in the Midlands and there has scarcely been a day during the past month when visitors could not pleasantly get about the country and enjoy the scenery in its beautiful spring dress.

THE CUCKOO. This harbinger of spring was heard last Sunday evening [24 Ebrill 1892], in that portion of "Little Switzerland known as Alteryn, giving voice by several gentlemen. Traditionally the cuckoo goes to Pontypool Fair, held towards the close of last week, so that it is only a couple of days late this year. It has been seen on the wing but silent in other parts of the suburbs of Newport. The. wags have it that the bird has been 1D search of the new Public Park, which still remains in its virgin state of pasture land.

TOWYN. THE CUCKOO AT LAST. - April went by on the wings of the cold east wind and the cuckoo`s voice was not heard in the valleys, but with the advent of May, though shrouded with frost, the cuckoo, weak and hoarse, was heard in woods round Sandilands Mid Bodtalog. It is much to be hoped that with the coming of the cuckoo, the frost, the snow, the cold biting wind, and the sense of dreariness will depart to those regions to which man is a stranger.

THE CUCKOO.—The welcome sound of the cuckoo's two notes was heard in Llanyblodwe parish on Thursday, April 18th, by numbers of men, women, and children. I do not mention with certainty the assertion of the person who heard it niue days previously, somewhere about Pant, for in most neighbourhoods there is such a person.whose acute sense of hearing penetrates further than most people's. It is enough for my purpose to say that the cuckoo was actually heard on the 18th in these parts.

I spent some time this morning (1895) admiring the rich tangle of an osier-bed on the Itchen. Here was the later willow-herb (Epilobium hirsutum), spangled with carmine ; the meadow-sweet, with creamy corymbs as fragrant as on midsummer day ; white con¬volvulus ; bitter-sweet, bearing purple and yellow flowers mingled with its scarlet berries; white valerian and pink hemp agrimony; yellow marsh Lysimachia and crimson loose¬strife—all these be flowers of stature. Of more lowly growth are the St. John's worts, golden elecampane, and violet skullcap. This last, however, is not the six-inch dwarf one has seen in the shingle beside a Highland loch ; here, heat and moisture have encouraged it to a height of a couple of feet. The glow of colour and the rich setting of reeds and other foliage are what the eye may revel in with content for a long time.
Then the hedge dividing the osiers from the road is draped with graceful briony and wild clematis. Why is this British clematis, with its wan, inconspicuous flowers, called traveller's joy ? It is the poor relation of the brilliant exotic species, and there are showier herbs in which wayfarers might be expected to take more delight....The hollow wood beyond is gay with scarlet fruit spikes of cuckoo-pint

THE FIRST CUCKOO. A correspondent writes that the extremely mild weather is bringing vegetation rapidly into life in Mid-Staffordshire. The hedges are all in bud and buttercups are by no means scarce. On Saturday afternoon [15 Chwefror] the thrush was indulging in joyous song, while the blackbird tuned his melodious notes. Most surprising of all was the voice of the cuckoo, which was heard clear and strong in a field near Armitage Parish Church. The cuckoo rarely visits our shores before April, and his early advent is therefore, uncommonly interesting.

April 26 The wind still holds exceeding bitter and owing to the night frosts there is but little growth. The beech tree, one of several that stand up on the garden lawn of this house, has however come into leaf. During all the many years that I have known this place, whatever the season, that tree has never failed to be the first to unfold its foliage, something in its constitution making it of an earlier habit than its fellows. The hawthorns also have dressed themselves in tender greens and down by the Bath Hills I noticed an oak almost bursting it`s buds while those of the ash at its side were still asleep in there hard sheaths of winter black. Although it was quite hot here where the east wind never comes, many of the beaches also have made no start at all. The butterflies however know that spring is at hand for already I have seen peacocks, large sulphurs and two specimens of the scarce tortoiseshell. Today also I heard the cuckoo for the first time this year.

On the lawn has recently appeared a young cuckoo being fed by two water wagtails, with which I have been acquainted for many years. Heavens! how those poor little birds must work to keep their fosterling supplied! There the voracious, angry looking creature sits, now in one place and now in another, his scarlet maw extended wide, and eats, and scolds, and eats from dawn till dusk, and for aught I know to the contrary, from dusk till dawn as well...

Since 1832 the yellow-billed cuckoo has occurred in Wales on 3 occasions, being found dead in 1870 near Aberystwyth, and in 1899 at Craig y Don, Anglesey. The third was seen briefly at Porthclais Clais, Pembrokeshire on 30th October 1994, an occurrence graphically described by Devonald and Price 1994, the two fortunate observers. Bird watchers who had gathered to search for a yellow browed warbler reported nearby sadly missed out.

THE CUCKOO.-It was thought by many that the cold weather which had so long prevailed had effectually barred the advent of the cuckoo. It is reported on reliable authority that the cuckoo was heard in the Happy Valley early last week [21 Ebrill?]. This is not to be wondered at, because this valley is a favourite haunt of birds of song. Many years ago a nightingale honoured Bodtalog Wood with its presence and large numbers of people went to hear it.

...expedition by train to Lappworth in search of wild flowers..gathered primroses Cowslips, Ox-slips, Cuckoo-flowers, Strawberry Anemones, Early purple Vetch, White Violets, Dog Violets, Wood Sorrel, Moschatel, Lady's Mantle, Blackthorn, Bullace, Corn Crowfoot and Common Lesser Sedge and Daisies...there was no trace of any blossoms of the Sweet Purple Violet; I found a number of the white ones so conclude they flower a little later than the purple. The wild Pear was just ready to break into blossom and the buds of Hawthorn were very large.

Nightingales are unusually numerous in Wales this year. Hundreds of people went their way to the Lasgarn Wood near Abersychan, each night to hear the nightingale at midnight. On Saturday night [12 Mai 1906] several hundreds visited the neighbourhood, and the village was all alive with visitors until day-break. Strange to say, this is the exact spot where the cuckoo was first heard in the valley some six weeks ago.

SOMETHING TO BE SAID FOR LLANDEWI.— The parish of Llandewi`r-Cwm has held the reputation of being one of the "earliest" places in Mid-Wales, and this reputation has been confirmed this season, a farmer in the parish having cut a field of grain on the 1st instant [1 Awst]. It was always said in Builth that the cuckoo sings at Llandewi`r-Cwm a week before it is heard anywhere in the district, and a special effort was made to test this statement spring, with the result that the cuckoo was heard singing near Llandewi`r-Cwm bridge, in the valley of the [Dunhcawy], nine days before it was beard at Builth.

We have a most enjoyable picnic at Castell again and afterwards walk through the Keepers Wood when we meet Edward & Edwin. Long tailed tits. Very hot through the night and I do not get to sleep till after 4 a.m. At 3:30 a.m. it is daylight when i hear the cuckoo, who keeps up his double call for a considerable time. Bathing find the water still very [tanlinellwyd] cold. 8 a.m. Walking on the promenade see a large flock of gulls opposite the Hydro. I notice the Black Headed gulls have come back from their breeding grounds and with their black heads..... Meet RW Jones on the prom in the evening. He tells me that some years ago he heard the Cuckoo so late as June 30th. Asks me to keep a note when last heard - is very interested to hear. I saw the Great Northern Diver in the Bay last March 26th.

Wildlife and war : May 1915 The stonechat has already been seen twice in this part of Oxfordshire, though we have little land suitable for it and it has only once been recorded as breeding here. We should look out also for the wheatear, a bird confined as a rule to a higher slopes, and even then seen only occasionally. Cuckoo Near the Firing Line. Corporal T. H. Davies, of Deri, who is in France, writing under date of the 6th inst., says :—"We have had a warm time of it throughout Easter, and are glad of a spell for a few days. The little rest we had was in supports behind the firing line. When we arrived here (after a leave) we hardly knew the place, it was so changed from the winter months. Honeysuckle, lilac, and wild roses are all beginning to bloom, and the hops are starting to climb the wires. During a heavy shelling early Good Friday morning [21 Ebrill: Wolfram Alpha] I both heard and saw the cuckoo within 20 yards of the firing lines. Also that night I heard the nightingale, and the different birds were very busy through it all, some hatching their eggs and others re-building their nests. Here and there amongst them would come crashing down a massive oak or elm tree in full foliage. What a contrast to the dead and the dying being carried through the communication trench which runs along the same wood. The Canadians are alongside us, and rare fine chaps they are - all tryers and to see some of them stripped to the waist in the sun working the trench mortars was a sight long to be remembered

I can`t do purple patches well, but Merioneth now is nothing but bright sun and misty mountains and hazy seas and sloe blossoms [DRAENEN DDU] and wild cherry and grey rocks and young green grass. I am writing in my small, white-walled cottage of which I must have told you - the one that once belonged to a consumptive coachman, then to a drunken carpenter, then became a brothel, then a Sunday school and now serves as pleasaunce for me and my two sisters....There is a peculiar cuckoo in the woods just outside with a bad stammer. It says cu-cuckoo and sometimes even cu-cu-cuckoo. I must tell the Spectator about it....

ABERGWESSIN. Sheep Shearing.— Sheep shearing is still going on, but will be concluded this week. [20 Gorffennaf 1917]. Owing to this, hay harvest has not proceeded very far. Wheat at a High Altitude- Some wheat has been sown at Cefncendy Farm, on one of the highest slopes in this district, as an experiment, and so far it looks well and promising. The question is whether it will ripen. The Cuckoo — The cuckoo was heard here last Friday week, the 6th inst. [hwyr? 6 Gorffennaf], and probably was singing there later.

ABERGWESSIN. A delightful Place.-The School has been closed this week [tua 25 Gorffennaf 1917] for the Summer Holiday and Sheep shearing is at an end ... the hay harvest has now come in. Many hundreds of visitors have passed through this season again, in breaks and other vehicles. This hilly district is charming just now.
The hill sides are teeming with flowers, and a sight of perfect loveliness. The larks aresoaring and singing and everywhere is full of life. The notes of the cuckoo were persistent and prominent, the week before last, [and] right up to Friday the 13th inst. [13 Gorff 1917] and probably later.

Surrey [30 Mai ar frig yr erthygl] The morning sun was yet red on the horizon and mist hung above the lower meadows when the first mowing of grass began. Scent came across the lane fresher and sweeter than the odour from the thorns. It was a small field, hand-mown; swathes were heavy, deadening the sweep of scythes, but tall wild parsley, oat-grass spiked almost like corn, and thicker fescue all lay low, while the larks went up singing. In the wood hard by other birds started together, finches on the lower branches, throstles on the high boughs; a jay cluttered where the grove is thick, a cuckoo called, then, showing as big as a hawk, flew to the other side. The air was so slight as not to sway even the light stems of birch trees; when a bird settled after flying the bough was set in motion like a swing, and there was so much flitting to and fro that the trees everywhere, even oaks in full leaf, were visibly alive. Earlier in the week sheep, coated as they were, lay in the shade of spreading beeches, or, nearer a hedge, great elms. Now shearing has begun, and they nibble with comfort across the field. Grasshoppers are in the meadow and chaffers on the sycamore leaves.

The cold, chill air yesterday [1 Mehefin 1920] morning had changed by evening to a warm, heavy atmosphere, which with an almost continuous rainfall during the night has again produced a further advance in our hay meadow. Nothing seems to daunt the cuckoo, rain or shine. At daybreak he awakened me by his continued call, and was within earshot more or less till the cows were coming in. This bird seems to have no fear of company, and was calling a few days ago from some loganberry supports within four yards of the house, and seems never far away from us.

Tall foxgloves rear their many-flowered stems, their lower purple bells full open, their slender tips drooped gracefully, weighed down with a wealth of promising buds. Buttercups, with many golden blossoms on their long, far-reaching stems, top the tall flowering meadow grass, more abundantly than in most years. April 12, 1927 Fernhurst Found Cuckoo Flowers in the wild garden and Marsh Marigolds in the ponds. These are very late, as I saw gypsies with large bunches for sale near Hindhead, over a month ago. Early flowering tulips are out, also Yellow Alyssum, Double Arabis, Polyanthus in all colours, Auriculas, Star of Bethlehem, and hosts of Daffodils and Narcissi.

30 Sunny morning. Tremendous showers in the afternoon. Again saw the young Cuckoo being fed..... his foster mother was very busy hunting food for him among the cabbages, then on a birch tree. To feed him she ran up his back, and he turned his head over his shoulder, with his wide red mouth open to receive the food which she then popped in, and flew off for more. He kept up an incessant cry for food. It must be exhausting work for the foster mother, feeding such a large bird, And she is soon led him off to roost in the copse. About an hour later he was back again – sitting very dejected – and crying, but no foster mother came.

July 4 Found a young Cuckoo (few days old) in a Hedge-sparrow’s nest in the Cotoneaster on the house wall, below our kitchen window, and bits of the foster parents’ blue eggs on the ground below. July 10th the Hedge-sparrow does not “cover” the young Cuckoo today as hitherto. July 11 Hedge-sparrow did not rest on or near the nest with Cuckoo. July 15 Watched Hedge-sparrow feeding the young Cuckoo with a few softened breadcrumbs and bits of boiled potatoes. They did not give it any of the cooked fat provided for them. July 16 Cuckoo is out of the nest, on the edge of it. On 17th it goes down on the ground, but returns to the nest at night; 18th it tries to escape out of the net I have thrown over the bush. July 17 /19 I fed Cuckoo with soft biscuits and boiled potato. On 19th it picked bits of the bar I used to feed it. Late evening 19th it is trying to get away. 21st it picks food off ground and drinks; dips its beak in the water 24 times during the period I was watching. July 22 Cuckoo escapes. Found it on the 23rd in adjoining garden. On being disturbed it flew about 30 yards into another tree. 24th Hedge-sparrows are very busy feeding the Cuckoo. 28 Cuckoo being fed still. 29 Cuckoo drinking freely, flies about the garden, but I have not seen it picking food for itself. 24th/28 Hedge-sparrows are carrying food off bird table for young Cuckoo. July 29 Cuckoo drinking freely, but not yet seen finding food for itself.

April 25, 1948 The day was very sunny with little wind. With WTG, I left the George at 10:30am. With food and other necessaries stored in the rucksack, we walked to Bangor, and on to Bethesda. Near the Penrhyn estate, we watched and attach for a short time. Bells were tolling [Dydd Sul] and the woodland was full of bird song. We passed through Bethesda, and by the side of the river Ogwen, we prepared lunch. After resting a short time on the weir, We went onwards through Nant Ffrancon. A Dipper dashed upstream, a few ravens could be heard in the hills. We reached Ogwen, and after a cup of tea at Myrfyn’s teashop, started to climb Tryfan. The going was rough, the rock steady. A fine male[symbol cylch ‘gwryw’] Ring Ouzel was seen on the lower slopes. When I rounded a slab of rock,, a bird brushed passed my face. After a short search, I found a nest of withered grass, concealed among short grass and heather. The eggs were very dark; chocolate blotched on a stone coloured ground (Meadow Pipit). One swallow was seen at Nant Ffrancon; Wheatears and Meadow Pipits were common. The Cuckoo was heard in the valley. We descended from the summit and after taking a few snaps, walked to Bethesda and caught the bus home.

We drew level with the north-east tip of the island, and, cruising beneath the east slopes, saw herring-gulls, kittiwakes, razorbills and guillemots nesting on the cliffs. Several birds were also resting on the sea, but took off and flew round rapidly as we approached. Rounded Pen Cristin, and came to rest in Cefn Enlli, where the boat was unloaded....we set off ...I was burdened with a basketful of rhubarb, so was..pleased when our companion left us at the first farmhouse we came to (paradoxically called `Ty Pella`!). We pressed on along the main (and only) road...passed the old school, Cristin, Plas Bach, Carreg Farm, and Carreg Fach finally reaching our destination, Ty Nesa....past the ruined abbey... turned right past the old chapel...to the northern tip of the island along the western slope of the mountain. A small clump of bushes behind the chapel contained ...meadow pipits, a linnet, wheatear, and a cuckoo, being followed in flight by two pipits.
A curlew was seen foraging on the mountain slope, while swallows and house-martins flew overhead, and then from the northeren slopes we could see cormorants, oystercatchers, a raven and also a fulmar flying past to the east...we headed straight down to Ty Nesa where tea was awaiting us - a feast of gull`s scrambled eggs,- a novelty for us and extremely tasty...we again set out on ornithology bent...to the Cafn. On the way we had a look in at the school- a drawing of Father Christmas was still on the blackboard. A few birds were seen including magpies, house-martins, swifts, swallows, meadow pipits, and a pair of stonechats; also the alarm call of a blackbird was heard by Ty Pella.
...our goal was Pen Cristin, and we were soon there among the gullery. It was obvious that regular visits were paid to this spot by the islanders, for, among the scores of herring gull nests dotted about, we found only two containing eggs, three in one and one in the other. A guillemot was seen at its nest, with a single egg, and also a razorbill similarly situated. Two distinct colonies of kittiwakes were found, on the narrow inaccessible ledges, many birds on nests with eggs....we trudged up towards the summit of Bardsey Mountain, keeping to the east of the south ridge....we moved on to the summit and sat there ...Snowdon being plainly visible. A great many swallows and house-martins kept us company at the summit, flitting around in search of flies, while below us, flying over the east slopes, was a family party of six ravens. Far out at sea we could see five separate rafts of guillemots and/or razorbills. An estimated total was well over a thousand birds....we wrapped up and set out again late in search of shearwaters.

[1979?] The early morning shone with the suns of Lesser Celandine in a sky of Common Dog Violet. The woodland rides were green. The clover leaves of Wood-sorrel were suddenly abundant and I soon found a clump of this white-petalled flower in the damp shade of a larch-copse. By the brook which tumbled a few feet away, there smiled a spray of Primroses. But where are the Wood Anemones and the Heartsease this year? A Cuckoo breathed warmly on the wind, a hint of the long days to come; but where are the Wood Warbler and Whitethroat? The hesitant spring as yet holds them back. And the afternoon turned to a downpour of rain; to the reeling of Jackdaws in the wind and the tumbling to fields of the gulls. Of twenty-eight Black-headed Gulls in the flock, all but two had the handsome brown hood of summer. But, flying, they arched into a winter wind. The Sparrowhawk today flapped wearily out of sight. The seasons are turbulently mixed. But as an early dusk falls to the sound of the gale, I recall the brightness of the crimson Bullfinch of the morning, preciously proud of his nest-building mate, and, likewise, I await, with expectation, a rich and resplendent summer.

Since 1832 the yellow-billed cuckoo has occurred in Wales on 3 occasions, being found dead in 1870 near Aberystwyth, and in 1899 at Craig y Don, Anglesey. The third was seen briefly at Porthclais Clais, Pembrokeshire on 30th October 1994, an occurrence graphically described by Devonald and Price 1994, the two fortunate observers. Bird watchers who had gathered to search for a yellow browed warbler reported nearby sadly missed out.

Just heard a cuckoo (5pm). Considering the cold winter and cold spring I'm surprised to hear such an early cuckoo. In recent years i haven't heard a ( my first) cuckoo till early May. Looks like the dry weather will continue next week (after a possible few showers over the weekend)...another high pressure is building up from Monday afternoon. Could be that this will be one of the sunniest Aprils ever recorded

Martin reaches Europe! 6 April 2012
Locations received last night showed that Martin had crossed over from Algeria into Spain. At 0325hrs he was situated in a well-wooded landscape about 18km (11 miles) west of Lorca in Murcia region. Although we can’t tell exactly where he crossed the Mediterranean, he appears to have taken a very similar route to that taken by Clement on his southward passage last July. This makes Martin the first of the Cuckoos to make it into Europe - will he be the first to reach Britain?

I have collected dated records of cuckoo spit (mentioned here) recorded in diaries and letters and the vast majority are from May and June. The latest is a note dated 18 July 1922, by an obscure Rev Thomas from Tywyn, Abergele, as follows: "...Extraordinary amount of Cuckoo Spit this year, but all disappeared, almost suddenly, last week. This would place this latest cuckoo spit record at around 10 July. On what date did TG see these two walkers and their "beads of cuckoo spit"? Yesterday [18 Ionawr 2019] the temperature was just slipping below 40°C, there was heavy cloud cover and the unmistakeable call from a neighbour's tree of the eastern koel. The bird migrates from south-east Asia in spring/early summer to breed. A type of cuckoo, the female lays a single egg in the nest a host species, usually red wattlebirds. The koel chick then ejects the other chicks. Not often seen, the bird is notorious for its loud, repetitive calls, often in the middle of the night. Unusually, the young male did stop and pose for photos whereas a female that appeared on the scene was more circumspect, quickly disappearing into a more-distant tree.
